Pet Cost Calculator
Estimate what a dog or cat really costs: first year, every year after, and a whole lifetime.
Annual costs
One-time costs
Estimates vary widely by region, breed, age, and health. Defaults are rough US-based figures and change over time; confirm current prices with your own vet, insurer, and pet stores, then edit the fields above. Amounts are shown in your local currency symbol for convenience but represent whatever number you enter.
Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to own a dog or cat?
It varies widely, but many owners spend roughly $1,000-$3,000 in the first year (including one-time setup like adoption, spay/neuter and initial supplies) and $1,000-$2,000 per year afterwards. Over a full lifetime this can add up to tens of thousands. This tool lets you edit every figure to match your own situation, so treat the defaults as starting estimates only.
Why does pet size change the estimate?
Larger animals generally eat more, so the food default rises with size (small, medium, large). Changing the size updates the food figure to a typical amount for that size, but you can still type your own number over it. Every other line item is fully editable too.
Are these default costs accurate for my area?
The defaults are rough US-based estimates and will not match every region, breed, or health situation. Prices for food, vet care, grooming and insurance change over time and vary by location. Always confirm current prices with your local vet, insurer and pet stores, then edit the fields to reflect real quotes.
